Is your home affected by Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) switch-off? Find out more
From June 30 2025, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is being phased out across the UK. If you have an RTS meter, your electric heating and hot water could stop working as normal.
Act now to ensure warmth this winter.

What is the RTS?
The RTS is an older system (introduced in the 1980s) that uses a radio signal to tell certain electricity meters when to switch between peak and off-peak rates. This allowed homes with electric heating (like storage heaters and immersion heaters) to charge up overnight at cheaper rates.
Why the service is ending
The technology is old, expensive to maintain, and is being replaced by modern alternatives like smart meters. The BBC's long-wave transmitter, which the RTS relies on, is being phased out.
When is the switch-off happening?
The switch-off is happening in phases starting on the 30th June 2025.

How to tell if you might have an RTS meter
How does this affect my heating?
It's worth pointing out that the Government is working with the power companies to phase out RTS to give more time to switch everyone to a smart meter.
As of June 2025, as many as 300,000 homes still have an old RTS meter that needs replacing.

The first step is to get in touch with your energy provider and get them to replace your existing meter with a new smart meter. You may also need to update your energy tariff, but there should be options that are similar to your existing tariff.
The change over could also be the perfect time to upgrade your heating system to a modern, more efficient system.
With more than a decade working to keep families and communities comfortable - using the industry's most advanced electric heating & hot water systems, we have replaced thousands of aged night storage heaters or panel heaters with modern, efficient clay core systems that can work seamlessly with new smart meters and can be as much as 40% cheaper to run.
