From July 2025, the way your heating is controlled could change, and if you’re still relying on old night storage heaters, it could cost you.
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), also known as Dynamic Teleswitch Service (DTS) has been used since the 1980s to switch Economy 7 meters and appliances – including night storage heaters – between peak and off-peak electricity rates. From the 30th June 2025, this service is being switched off. After that, your meter may stop working properly, or even start using power at expensive, peak daytime rates without warning.
If you’re still using night storage heaters that rely on the RTS signal, you could unknowingly be paying peak prices to charge your radiators overnight. Your heating schedule could become unpredictable, leaving you cold in the mornings or heating your home when you don’t need it. Some storage heaters may even completely stop working if the RTS fails to trigger overnight charging.
