With energy bill prices set to continue to rise over the next year, it’s vital to stay warm while also saving money.
There are a few steps you can take to ensure you stay warm while home working, but without spending a fortune on your energy bills.
Firstly, check to see if you are eligible for working from home tax relief. This Government scheme allows you to claim money back through your employer to put towards your home working expenses, such as your heating bills. You could claim back up to £6 per week.
Your central heating system is likely to be the biggest contributor to your household bills – which means there is potential for some big savings.
Check the age of your boiler. Old boilers can cost significantly more to run than new ones, however replacing your boiler can be costly. You could update your heating controls to make your older system more accurate and controllable. If you have a traditional ‘wet’ heating system, simply installing thermostatic radiator valves will allow you to adjust the temperature of individual radiators and turn them off completely, helping to save you money on your heating bills by ensuring you aren’t wasting heat in rooms you aren’t using.
Ensuring your ‘wet’ system water is clean and free of sludge will mean that your heating system is more efficient. If you have cold spots at the bottom of your radiators, or if some of your radiators take a much longer time to heat up than the others, this could be a sign that you have sludge in your system. A system with heavy sludge could increase your heating bills by up to 25%.
You should also check how balanced your heating system is, as a badly balanced system can result in you spending more money heating your home than you need to. In an unbalanced system, if you set the thermostat to 21°C, the upstairs may actually reach 24°C, while the downstairs will still be too cold.
It may seem evident, but the hotter you have your home, the more money you will spend heating it. Your annual heating bill actually increases by around 10% for every degree you turn the thermostat up. As well as saving you money on your energy bills, the typical home can reduce their carbon emissions by about 300kg per year for every degree the thermostat is turned down – helping you save the planet too.
Draught-proofing is one of the most cost-effective ways to save money and energy in your home. Blocking up any holes around doors, windows and the floor will ensure less heat is lost. You could install draught-proofing strips around windows and doors. Thick, lined curtains can help keep heat locked inside your home overnight, and installing a letterbox flap and brush can stop heat escaping through your front door.
We all know the simple joy of holding a warm mug of tea or coffee on a chilly winter’s day. Drinking a hot drink can help you to feel warmer from the inside, and holding the mug can warm your hands too. A good, hearty lunch can also help to make you feel warmer: soups, curries and stews are great at heating you up from the inside whilst also sustaining your energy.
It may seem obvious, but people often forget how effectively layering up can keep you warm and toasty. Air gets trapped between each item of clothing, making it harder for body heat to escape. Man-made fibres, such as polyester, often have good thermal properties, making them good options for clothing layers. Snuggle up in a cosy jumper, pull up your thickest socks and wrap yourself in a blanket to stay warm whilst working from home.
Home heating is evolving and moving away from fossil fuels; the days of gas and oil heating systems are numbered. Efficient electric heating is the future – it’s safe, quiet, clean, instantly warm and, most importantly, it’s sustainable in a modern world.
