Thanks to the comparatively simple design of the system and increased safety of electricity, switching from a gas system to an electric one is quite a simple process.
The biggest job is often removing your old system. A gas boiler can only be removed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you have an oil system, the oil feed to the house and the oil tank must be removed and disposed of safely. Once you’ve removed a gas or oil boiler, you should also remove the flue. Depending on where your boiler was installed, this could leave holes in external walls and ceilings. If your boiler was manufactured and installed after 2005, it is likely that you have a condensing boiler. This means there will be a condensation pipe running through a wall to the outside, which will also have to be removed. Your old boiler and tanks must be disposed of safely.
One of the main considerations when switching to an electric system is power supply. Some larger properties may require a three phase supply, which must be installed by a competent electrician. A major benefit to electric radiators is that each unit runs independently, meaning easy and mess free installation and no unsightly pipework.
Switching from gas to electric can bring many benefits to both the planet and your pocket. Firstly, most electric radiators have their own thermostat, allowing you to only heat the rooms you are using. Some even feature open window detection, which puts the radiator into standby when a window is opened, ensuring you don’t waste heat.
Some electric radiators can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, which makes it easier to heat your home more economically. Most people don’t walk around the house turning their radiator valves down, yet having easy control via an app to your entire heating system makes it much easier to only heat the rooms you’re using.
Electric radiators rarely need to be replaced, and don’t require any bleeding or balancing, so they’re easier and cheaper to maintain than traditional ‘wet’ radiators.
Electric heating is considered to be 100% efficient, as 100% of the energy used is converted into heat – whereas in a traditional ‘wet’ heating system some heat is lost through the pipes.
Finally, an electric heating system, when paired with a renewable energy source such as solar PV or wind generation, can give you total freedom away from polluting fossil fuels. With more homes investing in renewables, it’s clear that clean and green energy is our future – and it’s about time our heating systems followed suit.
As previously mentioned, the biggest task when switching from gas to electric heating is removing your old gas system. This could be quite a headache, however here at Heat Electric we like to make things simple. Our electric heating service includes removal and disposal of your old gas system and ‘wet’ radiators, so you can sit back and let us handle the hard work. You can request a free survey for your home as well.
Our experienced installation team use dust-sheets to protect your flooring, removing all waste when we leave and ensure that any additional electrical work is fully certified by our fully qualified tradespeople, taking the stress out of your heating installation.
Electric heating is more effective than gas heating. Gas radiators work using combustion and provide radiant heat directly to objects and people in its vicinity. Electric radiators work using both convection and radiation, without needing combustion, and provide the same level of effective heating in your home. Electric heating facilitates the equal convection of heat throughout all corners of the room, meaning you aren’t left with cold spots like you might be with traditional ‘wet’ radiators.
