The idea of living in a zero carbon home may sound like a dream – clean, efficient living with low energy bills, powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources. For many people, this feels out of reach, too expensive, or too complicated. The truth is, you don’t have to do everything at once. With the right choices and the right products, you can build a zero carbon home step by step, in a way that works for your life and your budget.

We help people move away from outdated heating and hot water systems, and towards a cleaner, smarter way of heating and powering their homes. Whether you’re starting from scratch or upgrading an existing property, here’s how you can get there, one step at a time.

Step 1: Electrify your heating

One of the biggest contributors to your home’s carbon emissions is heating, especially if you’re using a gas boiler or old, inefficient electric radiators. The first major step towards a zero carbon home is to switch to ELKATHERM® electric heating.

ELKATHERM® radiators are German engineered to the highest standards, designed to maximise energy savings. They have been independently tested by BSRIA, showing that once up to temperature, they only draw electricity for 15-17 minutes for every hour they’re turned on. They don’t use noisy fans or blowers, so the air is comfortable and quiet. You can control them room-by-room and set precise schedules to match your lifestyle, which helps cut waste and lower your electricity usage.

ELKATHERM® electric radiators are 100% electric, so they’re ready to run on clean energy – either from the grid, from solar panels, or from your own battery storage. It’s the ideal foundation for a low-carbon or zero carbon home.

Step 2: Power your home with solar energy

Once your heating is electric, the next logical step is to start generating your own clean, green energy. We install Qcells solar systems, which are some of the most reliable and efficient solar modules on the market.

Solar panels work silently in the background, converting daylight into electricity you can use to power your heating, appliances, lighting, and more. Any energy you don’t use can either be stored in a home battery or exported back to the grid for payment under a smart export tariff.

By generating your own power, you can reduce your reliance on the grid, reduce your energy bills, and shrink your carbon footprint. Even on cloudy days, a well-designed Qcells solar system can meet a surprising amount of your home’s energy needs, especially when combined with energy efficient ELKATHERM® radiators.

Step 3: Store your energy for when you need it

To truly get the most out of your electric heating and solar setup, you need to be able to store energy, and not just use it as it’s generated. That’s where battery storage comes in.

Qcells home battery stores excess electricity generated by your solar panels during the day, so you can use it later, to power your heating, lighting, or appliances in the evening, when solar generation naturally drops off. You can also charge the battery overnight using cheap rate electricity from the grid, and use it during the day to avoid peak prices.

A Sunamp heat battery stores energy in a phase change material to heat your water quickly, efficiently, and at mains pressure whenever you need it. It takes the place of a bulky hot water cylinder but is far more compact, loses far less heat, and delivers hot water on demand. You can charge it using solar energy or using a cheaper, overnight tariff, just like a Qcells battery, and enjoy hot showers and baths without relying on gas.

Together, these two types of battery give you full control over your home’s energy. You can generate and store power when it’s cheapest, and use it exactly when you need it to keep your home warm, your bills low, and your carbon footprint to a minimum.

Step 4: Fine-tune and grow over time

The beauty of this approach is that you don’t have to do it all in one go. Many of our customers start by replacing their old radiators with ELKATHERM®, or by installing solar panels, and then come back later for everything else once they’ve seen the difference it makes.

You can add to your system gradually: extra solar panels, a larger battery, more radiators – and we’ll be there at each stage to help you make the right decisions. Everything we install is built to last, with long warranties and minimal maintenance requirements, so you can grow your zero carbon home with confidence over the years.

A cleaner, simpler future, one step at a time

Building a zero carbon home isn’t about grand designs or starting from scratch, it’s about making better choices, one step at a time, and putting the pieces in place to take control of your energy. With a HeatElectric system, you can create a warm, comfortable, low-cost home that’s powered by clean electricity.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your heating, adding solar, or planning to go completely electric, we’d love to help. Get in touch today to book your free, no obligation home survey.
