How many solar panels can I fit on my roof?

If you’re thinking about going solar, the question of how many solar panels you can fit on your roof is likely one you’ve pondered.

Your roof space, orientation and pitch

Solar panels need a certain amount of unobstructed space to fit properly on your roof. The direction your roof faces is another important consideration – solar panels work best on south facing roofs with little shading. East and west facing roofs can still produce plenty of power if south facing space is limited. The best roof pitch for solar panels is generally between 30 and 40 degrees.

If your roof doesn’t have the right amount of space, don’t worry! There are a range of places we can install our Qcells solar panels when roof space isn’t available, including on the ground and even on walls. We can also install home batteries in properties without solar panels, including flats and apartments. This allows you to make use of cheaper, off-peak tariffs all day long.

Solar panel efficiency

More efficient solar panels produce more electricity per square metre. Our Qcells solar panels offer efficiencies up to 22.3%, which means you can generate more electricity with fewer panels.

Local regulations and planning permission

In the vast majority of cases, domestic solar PV doesn’t need planning permission under permitted development rights. You may need to apply for planning permission for a solar panel installation if you live in a conservation area or a listed building, but our team can help check this for you as part of the installation process.

How many solar panels do I need?

Most UK homes fit between 8 and 18 solar panels, depending on the energy needs of the household. Qcells high efficiency panels means you may need fewer panels to reach your energy goals.

If you also add home battery storage to your solar system, then having a few extra solar panels can make a big difference. More panels mean you’ll generate more surplus energy during the day, which you can store in your batteries and use overnight when the sun isn’t shining. This not only maximises your savings, but it also increases your energy independence, making the most of every kilowatt you produce.

You could even consider adding a Sunamp heat battery to your system, to heat your hot water for free using surplus solar energy!
