The nationwide shutdown of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), could leave thousands of UK households with outdated storage heaters paying a premium this winter.

If your home uses an Economy 7 tariff and old night storage heaters, there’s a good chance your heating is controlled by the RTS.

From 30th June 2025, the RTS signal will start being phased out, meaning:

  • Your meter may no longer know when to switch to off-peak rates
  • Storage heaters could charge at expensive, peak daytime rates
  • Some heating systems may stop functioning altogether

The result? Massive spikes in winter energy bills for those still using outdated heating systems.

A hidden risk for many households

Many homeowners may not realise their system relies on the RTS. The consequences of doing nothing could be serious, especially with energy prices still high and colder months ahead.
