Save 20% on home battery storage!

In a significant move towards promoting sustainable energy solutions, the UK government has announced an exemption for retrofitted battery energy storage systems (BESS) from the standard 20% VAT. Effective from 1 February 2024, this exemption marks a crucial expansion of the VAT relief on energy saving materials – there has never been a better time to adopt green technologies.

This groundbreaking development follows the 2022 Spring Statement, which initially granted VAT relief for energy saving domestic equipment, such as solar PV. At this time, BESS was only eligible for the exemption when installed alongside other energy saving equipment.

Thermal storage is also currently zero rated for VAT purposes, when installed alongside qualifying energy saving materials (such as solar PV).

What does this mean for me?

Battery energy storage systems, from 1 February 2023, are 0% VAT when retrofitted to existing energy saving materials, and when installed as a standalone technology. This means you can save 20% when you install a home battery - even if you don’t have solar panels!

If you choose to install a full solar PV system, you can also opt for a Sunamp thermal store to be installed simultaneously at 0% VAT.
