When our central heating stops working how it should, it can leave your home feeling cold and your energy bills high. From banging radiators to cold spots that never quite warm up, central heating problems are more common than you’d think.
Let’s start with a classic problem: radiators that don’t heat up evenly. If the bottom of your radiator is cold while the top is hot, it’s likely due to a buildup of rust and dirt clogging up your system. On the flip side, if the top is cold and the bottom is hot, trapped air is probably the culprit. Both are common issues that make your system work harder than it needs to.
There are also the sounds…those mysterious clanks, gurgles and hisses. While they may seem harmless at first, they can actually be signs of bigger problems, like air in the system, loose pipework, or incorrect pressure levels. The occasional sound isn’t unusual, but if your heating is starting to sound more like a haunted house, it’s time to investigate.
Thermostats can also cause issues, especially if they’re old or incorrectly placed. If your thermostat is too close to a draughty area or a heat source, it can send confusing signals to your boiler.
Another common frustration is a boiler that’s constantly losing pressure. This can be down to a leak in the system, or a faulty pressure relief valve. It’s worth checking your pressure gauge – most systems should sit between 1 and 2 bars. Anything significantly lower may need topping up, or may signal the need for a professional check.
And of course, there’s the dreaded ‘cold spot’. The one room that never seems to get warm, even when the rest of your home is nice and cosy. This can be caused by an unbalanced system or radiators that need bleeding. It could also point to poor design, or inadequate sizing.
Sometimes, it’s simply the age of the system. Older boilers and radiators can develop sludge, leaks, and inefficiencies over time. A lack of regular servicing only makes things worse, allowing minor problems to escalate. Poor installation or using a system that isn’t suited to the size of your home can also create long-term issues.
In some cases, you can. If your radiators have cold patches, bleeding them is a quick and easy fix. You can also adjust the boiler pressure yourself, as long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
However, there are many times when it’s best to leave things to a professional. Persistent noises, constant pressure loss, visible leaks, and widespread cold zones could point to deeper problems that require expert attention.
If your central heating system is more than 15 years old, it could be time to think about a replacement. New electric heating systems are more efficient, safer, and easier to control, Features like zoned heating, smart thermostats, and zero emissions at the point of use make electric heating an attractive alternative to gas.
