Renewable energy and electrification are key to reducing harmful carbon emissions. Renewable energy fluctuates however, and so with the increasing use of renewable sources comes an increasing need for energy storage. Energy storage allows us to take renewable energy whenever it’s available and store it for when we need it.
Thermal stores are an alternative to battery storage – but instead of electricity, they store thermal energy. Thermal energy storage means heating or cooling a medium to use the energy when needed. This could be as simple as using a water tank for heat storage, where the water is heated at times when energy is plentiful. This energy is stored in the water for use when less energy is available.
Thermal stores are divided into three types:
This is the most common type of thermal storage. Thermal stores using sensible heat use water or rock to store and release heat energy.
Latent heat thermal stores hold energy without the medium changing in temperature, but instead with the medium changing state. Phase change materials (PCMs) have been developed, which can store heat in their mass as latent heat.
Thermochemical thermal stores use chemical reactions to store and release heat in a reversible endothermic / exothermic reaction process.
Heat batteries can be used to store heat from a range of different sources to give you hot water. They often take up less space than a traditional water tank, can store heat for longer, and don’t lose heat to their surroundings.
Sunamp Thermino heat batteries are latent heat thermal stores, which contain a high performance phase change material to deliver hot water on demand at mains pressure. The Thermino range is up to four times smaller than the equivalent hot water cylinder, meaning they look great in any home and free up valuable storage space.
These thermal stores use the high performance Plentigrade P58 PCM, which absorbs and releases thermal energy during a melting and freezing process, similar to the gel in a pocket handwarmer. Plentigrade P58 does not contain any hazardous or toxic materials, and there are no end-of-life disposal issues. A high powered heat exchanger or heating element immersed in this PCM rapidly charges the Thermino and heat is quickly extracted to provide fresh hot water at a constant temperature, only when it’s needed.
Sunamp is the only heat battery manufacturer in the world to be awarded A Grade RAL Certification, the only global standard for Phase Change Material (PCM) and PCM products. This award confirms performance with no noticeable degradation to 10,000 cycles, which is equivalent to over 13 years of daily use at two cycles per day of hot water application.
Thermino heat batteries are available in single and dual circuit models to work with a wide range of energy sources, including grid electricity and solar PV. Sunamp Thermino thermal stores also require no mandatory annual maintenance, and come with a market leading 10-year warranty on the heating element and storage core.
Thermal stores can help to reduce peak and level demand by storing energy when there is low demand, and releasing it when there is high demand. By ensuring energy is used when it is cheaper and more renewable sources are available, they can help to reduce harmful carbon emissions.
Sunamp’s patented PCM formulation can store four times more energy than water – meaning Thermino heat batteries are up to four times smaller than the hot water cylinders they replace, freeing up your airing cupboard space. As no water is held in a tank, there’s much less risk of catastrophic failure.
Hot water alone consumes 19% of the average household energy bill. With Sunamp you can benefit from standard or off-peak tariffs to charge your system, or divert energy from your own renewable sources. As much as 75% of annual domestic hot water can be provided when using Sunamp in combination with solar PV.
Sunamp thermal stores don’t require mandatory annual maintenance, so there’s no need for costly inspections or servicing by engineers. They also come with a two-year warranty, with extension to ten years for the thermal storage core and heating element.
