Solar panels are becoming a more common sight across the UK landscape, as we move towards a more sustainable future.

To reach the target of net zero emissions by 2050, we must cut emissions from electricity generation. When fossil fuels, such as gas and coal, are burned to meet our energy demands, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, causing climate change.

In 2020, for the first time, 42% of the UK’s electricity was generated by renewable sources, overtaking gas and coal plant generation. Solar panels are the most common domestic renewable energy source in the UK. A typical domestic solar PV system could save around one tonne of carbon each year, depending on where you live.

WHAT IS A SOLAR PV SYSTEM?

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems include a couple of different parts, which all do very different jobs.

  • Solar panels

Each solar panel is made up of groups of solar cells. Solar cells are made from a semiconductor – often silicon – and are grouped together to form a panel. Solar panels are then connected together in a group, which is called a solar array. This is what you see on rooftops across the UK.

  • Inverter

Electricity generated by the solar array is direct current (DC). UK homes work on the more reliable, safer alternating current (AC) system. An inverter is used to convert the DC into usable AC for the home.

  • Battery storage

A battery is an optional addition to a solar system. Solar batteries can store excess electricity generated throughout the day to be used at night when the sun is shining.

HOW A SOLAR PANEL SYSTEM WORKS

Each solar cell is made up of one or two layers of semiconductive material. When sunlight shines over a cell, an electrical field is created. This is known as the ‘photovoltaic effect’. Put simply:

  1. Solar cells absorb energy in the form of sunlight
  2. Electrons begin to move, generating an electrical current
  3. This current is captured as DC electricity
  4. DC electricity is converted to AC electricity by the inverter
  5. Electricity flows through your home, powering appliances and devices

HOW MUCH DOES A SOLAR PV SYSTEM COST

The total cost of a solar PV system will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The size of the system, including number of panels
  • The type of solar panels
  • The type of building they will be mounted on
  • The quality of the inverter
  • Whether you want a battery or not

SOLAR PV SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

Solar PV systems have no moving parts that can be affected by rust, and generally require little maintenance. You just need to ensure that the panels are clean, secure to the roof and free of debris. They can be easily cleaned with water if needed.

SOLAR PV SOLUTIONS WITH HEATELECTRIC

HeatElectric aim to be at the forefront of modern heating systems and energy saving technologies with our high quality solar PV systems. We’re proud to be a main supplier of Qcells.

Qcells polycrystalline solar modules are proven to offer the highest energy output worldwide, and deliver optimal performance even under a cloudy sky (PHOTON output test 2013). They are German engineered for quality, efficiency and performance, and come with a massive 25-year warranty as standard. Qcells solar panels have received the ‘Top Brand PV’ seal for eight consecutive years, proving their outstanding quality. Qcells solar panels can be mounted on both flat and pitched roofs

Make the most of your solar installation with a combined home solar battery & inverter from Qcells. With a high performance 4.6kW inverter, these batteries are modular and scalable, with a solution for homes of any size. They use SAMSUNG battery cells for maximum efficiency and safety, and feature a 15-year warranty. Check how much electricity your panels are generating with their smartphone app, which can also maximise energy yields by incorporating real time weather information.

Qcells gives you the flexibility to use all the electricity your panels generate, or to sell surplus back to the grid to save on your energy bills.

By combining a Qcells solar PV system with ELKATHERM® electric radiator solutions and a Sunamp heat battery, you could make your home more energy efficient while saving money on your energy bills.
