The energy price cap is increasing by around 5% from January 2024, which means the typical UK home could be spending an additional £94 each year on their energy bills. How much you pay depends on your usage, how you pay for energy, and your location. Here are 5 tips to reduce your energy bills this winter.

  1. Turn down your thermostat

Most of the energy we use at home goes on heating. Research by the Energy Saving Trust suggests that turning your thermostat down by just one degree can save around £145 per year.

Your thermostat should be set to the lowest comfortable temperature for you, which for most healthy adults is between 18°C and 23°C. Try turning the thermostat down just one degree at a time, ensuring you stay cosy and warm while also saving on your energy bills – and reducing your carbon footprint, too.

Electric heating allows for individual control of the temperature for each radiator. Our ELKATHERM® electric radiators are available in a range of control options. The innovative eComfort app lets you control your heating remotely, ensuring you never waste heat in rooms you aren’t using.  The app also allows you to make the most of other energy-saving features, including open window detection, daily heating schedules and the ability to zone your heating.

  1. Draught-proof your home

Poorly insulated homes are harder to keep warm, as they lose heat easily. Draught-proofing is a cheap and effective way to save on your energy bills. Consider installing a letter box cover, using sealant to close gaps between skirting boards and suspended floorboards, and adding draught-proofing strips around doors and windows. It sounds simple, but adding rugs and curtains to your home is a good way to add extra comfort and warmth. The more insulated your home is, the easier it will be to heat.

  1. Ensure you have the most efficient heaters

Not all electric radiators are equal. ELKATHERM® electric radiators boast a German A++ energy efficiency rating. They’re constructed using the highest quality materials to ensure rapid and even heat distribution, and are available in a huge range of shapes, sizes, styles and colours. They contain a smart ceramic fireclay core, which heats to its optimum working temperature in minutes and stays warm for hours with minimal top-ups – typically only taking 15-17 minutes of electricity for every hour it’s turned on.

  1. Consider a home battery

Home battery storage lets you save energy for later use. While it's commonly associated with solar systems, you can also use home battery storage to store energy from the National Grid – no solar panels required! Home batteries can be installed in almost any property, even apartments and flats.

With energy prices fluctuating throughout the day, a home battery lets you take advantage of cheaper, off-peak energy rates. You can charge your battery during low-demand hours and use the energy during the high-demand hours, helping to save on your energy bills. Home battery systems are typically low-maintenance and can last around 15 years, making them a valuable long-term investment.

If you live in a property suitable for solar panels, combining them with a home battery can further increase energy savings – and reduce your carbon footprint.

  1. Upgrade your boiler

Traditional gas boilers just don’t cut it in today’s modern society. Sunamp's innovative thermal energy storage technology enhances the efficiency of your heating system by storing excess energy during periods of low demand. This stored energy is then released when needed, providing hot water at mains pressure throughout the house. That’s not all – Sunamp Thermino heat batteries are up to 4-times smaller than the equivalent hot water cylinder, saving you space too. They can work with a range of energy sources – including solar PV – helping to reduce both your carbon footprint and your energy bills.
